About the app

Anyone with an intact female dog knows the question: when will she be in heat again? The answer decides about holidays, training classes, boarding kennels and when the leash must stay on. Lunella answers it from the owner's own entries: the first time with reference values by the dog's size, then more and more precisely from the intervals the dog actually has.

The app distinguishes the four stages proestrus, standing heat, diestrus and anestrus and shows on the home screen, as a ring and a bar, where the dog is right now. For every stage Lunella explains what happens in the body, how to recognise it, what to do and when a vet visit is needed. Warnings appear when bleeding lasts too long, when intervals are too short or too long and when a heat is overdue. In the weeks after a heat Lunella reminds owners of the signs of pyometra and false pregnancy.

Breeders use breeder mode: progesterone values in ng/ml or nmol/l with interpretation, ovulation set automatically from the values, mating or insemination, due date from ovulation, pregnancy milestones with reminders and a report as a text file for the vet. Comparable breeder apps cost $50 to $100 a year; with Lunella everything is included in the yearly subscription of €9.99.

Lunella has no server and no account. All data lives on the device and a backup can be saved as a file. There are no ads and no tracking.

About the developer

Hanno Welsch develops apps for iOS and Android under the name ihanwel. Lunella was prompted by his own dog: the existing apps only counted days, explained nothing and charged several times as much. Lunella grew out of the wish to understand the heat instead of just ticking it off, with texts based on veterinary literature and a price that is fair for owners and breeders.
